EDUCATION

Weihao Zhong is currently studying MA Fine Arts at Univeristy of the Arts London, Chelsea College of Arts & Design.

He also received the Bachelor's Degree in Interior and Spatial Design from University of the Arts London, Camberwell College of Arts in 2022.

Weihao's artistic practice, since 2022, has been focused on deeply exploring and challenging various assumptions and structures of modern society. Through multiple forms of work, including sculpture, video, and mixed media, Weihao reveals the complexities and contradictions in cultural, economic, and power dynamics, reflecting his profound insight and critical thinking about contemporary society.

In the project "Middlebrow & Synaesthesia," Weihao used sculpture to explore the mass templated production of middle-class culture and the phenomenon of the entertainment of social ideology. These works highlighted the rapid consumption and submergence of exquisite culture by popular culture, pointing out that cultural truths are often masked by the superficial label of "culture." By using everyday objects like pillows as the main imagery, Weihao aims to draw public attention to cultural degradation and erosion.

The "Judgement Day" project, through the medium of video, challenges the boundaries between reality and illusion, prompting viewers to re-examine the material world and the constructed social structures and ethics. In this work, Weihao explores the spiritual and emotional dimensions of human existence, especially in the context of societal collapse, where traditional values and systems lose their meaning.

In "Family Feast," Weihao explores the core spiritual conflicts between the older and newer generations in East Asian families through video. The work portrays the intense conflict between traditional collectivist family notions and emerging individual consciousness, revealing the pain of inevitable self-transformation and social restructuring in the process of modernization.

In "Gazing is also a Form of Power," Weihao focuses on the status of women in a patriarchal society, paying special attention to the suppression of women's discourse and their struggle to find expression through literature and art. This work aims to reverse the traditional male gaze, empower the female perspective, and emphasize the importance of women's writing as a form of resistance and self-expression.

Lastly, "Dialogue: Economy and Marriage" examines the economic basis of the marriage system and its impact on society, especially the inequality in the distribution of gender roles. As part of the "Dialogue" series, this video work reveals the inherent inequalities and social constructs in traditional marriage systems through poetic conversations between spouses.

In Weihao's creations, audiences can see a courage that continuously challenges traditional notions and mainstream values. His works often reveal issues that are either overlooked by society or taken for granted, bringing these issues into public discussion through the form of art. This artistic practice not only offers new perspectives to examine the surrounding world but also provides a new way of thinking for the public to understand and address complex social phenomena.

Furthermore, Weihao's artistic explorations demonstrate a deep understanding of context and media. His works span different art forms, from sculpture to video, to mixed media, with each choice carefully considered to maximally convey the theme and ideas. His works emphasize the individual's position in social and cultural contexts and explore how individuals find their voice and place in a constantly changing environment. They are not only explorations of individual and collective experiences but also profound reflections on history, culture, and social structures.
